Hello again! I’ve popped in to show you what we made in card class this week – a male & female birthday card, using the ‘Spotlight’ technique. The ‘Spotlight’ technique means to focus on one particular spot of an image and use colour to draw attention to that spot.

For the first card, we stamped the flower stamp from Butterfly Basics with Memento Black, onto Whisper White cardstock. A circle was then punched out using the 1-3/4″ Circle punch. Another smaller piece of Whisper White cardstock was also stamped with the flower stamp. This was placed behind the punched hole, and lined up with the above stamping.

The smaller piece of card was then coloured with Blackberry Bliss, Pear Pizzazz, and Crushed Curry Stampin’ Write Markers; and stuck behind the front piece with Stampin’ Dimensionals. This was layered on a piece of Blackberry Bliss cardstock. We then adhered this down with Multipurpose liquid glue (Tombow) onto thick Whisper White cardstock.

The inside of the card and corner of the envelope were also stamped with the flower stamp, using Memento Black. The sentiment on the front of the card is from the Hostess set ‘Happy Birthday, Everyone’; and was inked up with Blackberry Bliss.

Here is the finished card :)

For the second card, we used Sheltering Tree. The tree was stamped with Early Espresso on Whisper White cardstock. A smaller rectangle of Whisper White was also stamped with a portion of the tree.

Using So Saffron, Calypso Coral, and Cherry Cobbler inks; the leaves were stamped haphazardly on the small rectangle only. A few smaller leaves were also stamped using So Saffron and Calypso Coral. The inside of the card, and the envelope were also stamped with the leaves.

The small rectangle was mounted onto Early Espresso cardstock, adhered in place to the larger piece of Whisper White with just the tree outline; and stuck down on a card base of Early Espresso. The sentiment also came from the Hostess set ‘Happy Birthday, Everyone’; and was stamped with Cherry Cobbler.

Here’s the final result.

I hope I’ve inspired you to give the ‘Spotlight’ technique a go! ‘Til next time x

Love this card. Maybe I’m over-thinking it, but how do you get the smaller piece to line up with the bigger image so the mounted piece is centered on the card?

I think I figured it out. Did you stamp both pieces at the same time? Then the little bit of gap will be covered by the espresso paper?

Hi Kim! For the Sheltering Tree card, the base card layer was stamped with the tree, then the overlying piece was stamped as well. To make this process easier, try using a sheet of acetate or vellum in between; so you can stamp the exact portion of the tree that you want :)

Hi Rainy, the base card size of the Sheltering Tree card is 14.5cm x 21cm (based on Australian A4 card sizing) :)
